Raj Patel

Raj Patel is a renowned writer, filmmaker and scholar, currently serving as Research Professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.
He studied at Oxford University, the London School of Economics and Cornell University, worked at the World Bank and the World Trade Organization, and has been widely involved in international social movements. He has testified to the US, UK and EU governments on the causes of the global food crisis, and is a member of the International Panel on Sustainable Food Systems. In 2016, he received the James Beard Foundation Leadership Award.
In addition to his scholarly work in economics, philosophy, political science and public health journals, he regularly contributes to The Guardian and has been featured in major publications such as The Financial Times, The New York Times, The Mail on Sunday, The Observer and Scientific American.
His representative books include Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System, The Value of Nothing (a New York Times and international bestseller), A History of the World in Seven Cheap Things (co-authored with Jason W. Moore) and Inflamed: Deep Medicine and The Anatomy of Injustice (co-authored with Rupa Marya).
He also co-directed the award-winning documentary The Ants & the Grasshopper with Zak Piper and is the host of the food politics podcast The Secret Ingredient with Mother Jones's Tom Philpott and KUT's Rebecca McInroy.
